Quadrilateral Cowboy: IndieCade Winner & More

Thirty Flights of Loving and Atom Zombie Smasher developer Blendo Games has emerged victorious, claiming the Grand Jury Prize at this year’s IndieCade festival in Culver City, CA, with its forthcoming cyberpunk thriller, Quadrilateral Cowboy. (Thanks to Gamasutra.)

This peculiarly titled curiosity is centered around a computer hacker who undertakes a series of simulated heists to formulate an attack plan that criminals can acquire in the real world. Set in the 80s, the most remarkable feature of Quadrilateral Cowboy is that players are required to physically write lines of code using the correct syntax.

With one of its selling points being “a considerable amount of typing,” Quadrilateral Cowboy is destined to be an extremely controversial game. I had the opportunity to play it for over 20 minutes at PAX Prime in 2012. On the one hand, I appreciated its unique concept and commitment to authenticity. On the other hand, I found the act of actually typing lines of code to be the most tiresome task. However, I’ll still be keen to watch others play, as it manages to capture that quirky, cartoony caper atmosphere that made Gravity Bone and Thirty Flights so delightfully eccentric.
