Arkham Horror: Mother’s Embrace Unveils Thrilling Gameplay

Asmodee Digital’s video game adaptation of the highly acclaimed Lovecraft-inspired Arkham Horror board game series is drawing near. The Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, and PC release is slated for “Q1 2021”, and we’ve finally been treated to a first in-depth look at the narrative-driven tactical RPG in a freshly released gameplay trailer.

Arkham Horror: Mother’s Embrace, as it is called, was initially announced as an adaptation of Fantasy Flight Games’ another Lovecraft-inspired board game series, Mansions of Madness, back in 2018. However, it received its new name and a new developer, Artefacts Studio, last year.

Despite the change in development, Arkham Horror: Mother’s Embrace remains largely in line with Asmodee’s initial announcement. It sets players loose in a creepy old mansion in around 1926, where the heinous murder of an astronomy professor has taken place.

To solve the case, players must assemble a team of investigators, choosing from 12 distinctively skilled characters from throughout the Arkham Horror universe. Then, they embark on what Asmodee describes as a “squad-based narrative adventure” through a pulp-inspired America of the 1920s, combining “exploration, investigation, and tactical RPG combat phases”.

“As investigators confront Lovecraftian terrors,” it elaborates, “they will delve deeper into the abyss of madness, influencing their level of sanity and causing traumas that will shape the course of their investigation. Alongside encountering curious science, living nightmares, and a sinister cult, players will engage in turn-based combat against a variety of enemies, all while striving to preserve their sanity.”

There are clues to be discovered and characters to be questioned as the game’s nine chapters gradually unfold from the mansion and onto the streets of Arkham, making stops at places like Miskatonic University and Arkham Asylum, before proceeding to the bayous of Louisiana.

You can gain an understanding of how this will play out in Asmodee’s new Arkham Horror: Mother’s Embrace gameplay trailer above. And if you remain sufficiently interested after watching it, the full game will be released in Q1 2021 on PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and Steam.
