Fallout 4 & Skyrim PS4 Mods Seem Dead: Bethesda Blames Sony

It seems that the PlayStation 4 versions of Fallout 4 and Skyrim Special Edition won’t be getting mod support, and Bethesda is pointing the finger at Sony.

In an update on Bethesda.net, the company stated that Sony has blocked mods for the role-playing games in the way they should ideally function.

Fallout 4 on Xbox One has had mod support since May.

“After months of discussions with Sony, we’re sorry to say that although we’ve been ready to provide mod support on PS4 for a long time, Sony has informed us that they won’t approve user mods in the manner they should operate: where users can do whatever they desire for either Fallout 4 or Skyrim Special Edition.”

This is a concerning development for PS4 owners who were previously told to anticipate mod support for Fallout 4 months ago.

The mod support for Fallout 4, which was launched on Xbox One back in May, was postponed on PS4 in June. At that time, Bethesda disclosed some of the problems associated with getting Fallout 4 mods to work with Sony’s console.

Firstly, PC textures are utilized, which may lead to memory and performance issues. Secondly, sound files are currently not supported as the PS4 sound format is a proprietary one. And thirdly – and perhaps most worryingly – the PS4 mod storage limit is approximately 900MB, in contrast to 2GB on Xbox One at launch. Bethesda mentioned that it was collaborating with Sony to increase this limit, but it appears that those negotiations have fallen through.

“Just like you, we are disappointed with Sony’s decision considering the significant amount of time and effort we’ve invested in this project, and the lengthy wait our fans have endured for mod support to arrive,” Bethesda continued.

“We view this as an important initiative and we hope to discover alternative ways to make user mods accessible for our PlayStation audience. However, until Sony permits us to offer proper mod support for PS4, that content for Fallout 4 and Skyrim on PlayStation 4 will not be made available.

“We will provide an update if and when this situation changes.”

Sony has not yet commented on the matter, but this hasn’t stopped Microsoft from taking advantage of the news.
