PlayStation skips Gamescom 2022

PlayStation skips Gamescom 2022

PlayStation is the latest major company to announce that it will skip Gamescom this year.

The annual European event, held in Cologne, was traditionally the largest in terms of visitors in the world. This summer, Gamescom will return as a physical event for the first time since 2019, although with fewer publishers in attendance.

PlayStation confirmed its decision to skip Gamescom 2022 in a statement to German publication Games Wirtschaft (thanks, GamesIndustry.biz), and also confirmed that it will not make any announcements during the Geoff Keighley-hosted Opening Night Live stream of the show.

Sony’s move follows a similar decision by Nintendo, which announced earlier this month that it will “not attend” after careful consideration.

Activision Blizzard and Take-Two have also confirmed that they will not be participating.

Microsoft has yet to publicly state whether it will attend – although it seems unlikely, given that it has little first-party content to showcase this year.

The reduced attendance at Gamescom this year reflects a quieter-than-expected Q4 for the games industry as a whole, with various major releases now expected in 2023.

Gamescom 2022 is scheduled to take place from 24th to 28th August. So far, Bandai Namco and Embracer have confirmed that they will be attending.
