Save Homeworld fails to land RTS rights

Back in January, the interactive media firm teamPixel launched a crowdfunding campaign to acquire the rights to Relic’s space-themed RTS Homeworld, with the intention of creating a mobile remake and sequel. Although the campaign exceeded its funding goal, teamPixel was outbid at the auction for the series’ rights after then-IP holder THQ went bankrupt. Consequently, all backers will be receiving refunds.

“The auction for the Homeworld license ended on April 15, 2013. Although we qualified as a potential bidder in the bankruptcy auction, we were unable to raise sufficient funds to compete effectively against other parties at the auction,” teamPixel wrote in a Kickstarter update.

So, who is the new Homeworld owner? We don’t know. teamPixel suggests that the new owner will be announced in the coming weeks, as the acquisition won’t be final until around mid-May.

This wasn’t a total failure for teamPixel, as it will be moving forward with its own space RTS, but it won’t be called Homeworld and will instead be a new IP. All backers of the Homeworld project will be compensated with a credit towards this upcoming Homeworld-inspired RTS through teamPixel’s Save Homeworld campaign website.

Backers will be able to obtain their refunds through the Save Homeworld campaign website.
