Spelunky Sets New Record & More Gaming News

Spelunky player D Tea has astonishingly established a fresh speedrunning world record, dashing towards the genuine conclusion of Derek Yu’s platforming roguelike with an unprecedented swiftness. In an incredibly brief span of three minutes, 44 seconds, and 411 milliseconds, D Tea vanquishes Yama, the mighty ruler of Hell.

For those not well-acquainted with Spelunky, reaching Hell is an accomplishment in itself. It demands traversing through a convoluted sequence of secrets, involving the discovery of several concealed levels and the acquisition of a few scarce items.

Remarkably, D Tea seems to have an exceptionally fortunate seed. They obtain the teleporter – an essential element for a competitive speedrun – at the second stage, and fortuitously, they commence right beside the hidden entrance to the Black Market in 2 – 2.

Even with these strokes of good fortune, this is an extremely remarkable run. D Tea makes the use of the teleporter appear almost like cheating, yet it is all too simple to misjudge its distance and teleport into a wall, leading to an instantaneous demise. It is truly astonishing that this does not occur, considering the numerous close calls D Tea encounters.

Furthermore, a true ending run cannot solely depend on the teleporter. Reaching Hell requires transporting specific items across multiple levels, and one can only hold a single item in their hands at a time. Consequently, the teleporter is no longer in use during the final eight stages, making them more straightforward to follow.

Perhaps the most captivating part of the run for me occurs merely 23 seconds into the video. At this point, D Tea engages in a skirmish with a shopkeeper over a jetpack and a teleporter. Armed with only their initial gear in a confined space, D Tea stylishly pilfers the wares from the hapless merchant without missing a beat. Be sure to check it out.
